What is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)?

ESG is a minimally invasive, incisionless procedure performed through the mouth using a flexible endoscope. Sutures are placed along the stomach wall to reduce its functional volume. No stomach tissue is removed.

How is ESG different from a surgical sleeve gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy permanently removes about 80% of the stomach through laparoscopic surgery. ESG reshapes the stomach with sutures — no tissue removal, no external incisions — and is generally considered adjustable.

How much weight loss is typical?

Published series report mean Total Body Weight Loss around 13–17% at 12 months. Individual results vary substantially based on adherence to nutrition, activity, and follow-up.

Is ESG reversible?

Because no tissue is removed, ESG sutures can typically be adjusted or released endoscopically if clinically appropriate. Your physician can explain what reversibility means for your specific case.

Who is a candidate?

Adults with a BMI usually between 30 and 50, without contraindicating conditions, who have not achieved goals with non-surgical approaches. Only a qualified physician can determine candidacy after a full evaluation.

What are the main risks?

Nausea, pain, reflux, bleeding, infection, suture loosening, need for revision, anesthesia-related risks, and rare serious events such as perforation. Individual risks depend on medical history.

How long is recovery?

Most patients are discharged the same day or after overnight observation. A staged diet typically lasts 4–6 weeks. Recovery varies.

Is ESG covered by insurance?

Coverage varies widely. Many patients self-pay. Our coordinators can help you understand documentation options.

Can ESG be combined with GLP-1 medications?

Some patients use both under physician guidance. This is an individualized clinical decision.

Does ESG prevent future bariatric surgery?

Because ESG preserves the natural anatomy of the stomach, it generally does not preclude future surgery if a patient and physician decide that path is appropriate.
